As an accredited @digestion.with.confidence practitioner, one of the conditions I can help with is low stomach acid.

We can only produce stomach acid when our nervous system is in the "rest and digest" mode (as opposed to "fight or flight"). We also need to produce stomach acid at the right time to help us digest our food.

Just think about he busy-ness of our modern lifestyles for a moment. Think about how many people feel that there is no time, at work or at home, to take time out to fully relax around eating. Is it any wonder that so many experience the symptoms associated with low stomach acid?

Taking time away from the busy-ness to eat in a relaxed way is a great first step towards optimising your digestion.

There's a common belief that acid reflux is caused

There's a common belief that acid reflux is caused by "too much acidity". It's not. Your stomach is meant to be highly acidic - if it's not, it significantly impairs the digestion of food in the stomach.

Acid reflux is caused by stomach acid being where it shouldn't be: in the oesophagus. There are several aspects of our modern lifestyles that increase the chances of stomach acid backing up into the oesophagus.

Proton pump inhibitor medications like omeprazole block the production of stomach acid and so can relieve the pain of heartburn and importantly also prevent the oesophagus from being damaged. However, they don't address the reasons that reflux happens, and over time, the resulting lack of stomach acid can lead to further digestive problems such as nausea, bloating and constipation or diarrhoea.

I'm very happy to say that I am now an accredited practitioner in working with acid reflux by the organisation @digestion.with.confidence

Digestion with Confidence is spearheaded by @debbiegrayson57 : pharmacist, nutritional therapist and mentor extraordinaire. She says, "We are on a mission to help improve the digestion of people across the globe. Our practitioners have undergone extensive training in reflux management with and without prescribed reflux medicine." Debbie has many many years of experience of supporting people with acid reflux and associated digestive issues to regain digestive health, and has been passing this on to a network of practitioners.

This accreditation has greatly increased my expertise in helping with acid reflux, silent reflux, indigestion, gastritis and more, whether you are taking medication for these issues or not. I am seeing so many more cases of acid reflux in clinic than even a few years ago, likely driven by our modern lifestyles. Acid reflux can also be a really common and distressing side effect of chemotherapy, and it is always wonderful to be able to use nutrition and lifestyle to alleviate treatment-related side effects.

A more personal reason for doing this training was learning that reflux plays a big role in the disease process of bronchiectasis. Reflux can lead to aspiration into the lungs, and lungs with bronchiectasis can't defend themselves against this. Acid blocking medications such as proton pump inhibitors are no help in this situation as they don't stop the reflux, just the acidity, so preventing reflux in the first place is key.

September is a good time for setting new routines

September is a good time for setting new routines that include healthy habits. And there's always scope for revisiting some basics first, because it's very easy for these to fall away over the summer.

The last slide is the result of me doing some batch cooking today. I was taken by surprise yesterday and didn't have any soup, so today I made sure to rectify that. Leek, garlic, butterbean, cavolo nero, broth, spices. It wasn't as cold today, but next time it is I will be able to whip some soup out of the freezer 😀

Probably the item in it that I was most excited to get was this pouch of @adunasuperfoods fonio. I'm ashamed to admit that I'd never come across fonio before. It is an ancient grain from West Africa and is naturally gluten free. The cooking suggestion on the pack makes me think I could use it as a direct substitute for quinoa, or as a porridge.

If you've cooked with fonio before and have any top tips, I'd love to hear them.
